Highlights on a Kobo e-reader can be imported into Twos, one list per book and one thing per highlight.

This reads the e-reader itself, so it brings in every highlight on it: books from the Kobo store, library books borrowed through OverDrive, and books you added yourself.

Before you start

You need your Kobo, a USB cable, and a computer with Twos open on the web or in the desktop app. Kobo keeps highlights in a file on the e-reader, and a phone cannot open it, so this can't be done from the iPhone or iPad app.

Import

  1. Connect your Kobo to the computer with a USB cable, then tap Connect on the Kobo.
  2. Open Settings Integrations Kobo and choose Choose KoboReader.sqlite.
  3. In the file window, open the Kobo drive, then its .kobo folder, and choose KoboReader.sqlite.

The .kobo folder is hidden. On a Mac, press Command + Shift + . in the file window to show hidden folders.

You will see a preview of every book and how many highlights it found. Uncheck any book you do not want, then confirm. Nothing is created until you approve.

What comes across

Highlight text, in book order, grouped into a list per book. A note you attached to a highlight lands in that thing's note. Highlights you deleted on the Kobo stay out.

If no highlights show up

Eject your Kobo safely, connect it again, and choose the file again. A Kobo can hold back recent changes until it is properly disconnected, and a fresh connection writes them into the file.

Re-importing

Re-importing is safe. Every highlight carries an identifier from the Kobo, so a second run adds only what is new and skips what you already have.

Readwise

Readwise can sync Kobo highlights on its own after you sign in with your Kobo account, but only for books bought from Kobo, and it is a paid subscription. See Readwise.
