List, Gallery and Board

A list can be shown as rows, as a grid of photos, or as a board of columns.

The three#

Gallery and Board are both built on sublists. That is the one thing to understand about this page. A sublist becomes a card in Gallery and a column in Board. Everything in the list that is not a sublist keeps rendering as an ordinary row underneath.

So a list with no sublists in it has nothing to lay out, and switching to Gallery or Board will look like nothing happened.

Where to switch layout#

In that list's own settings, not the app's Settings. Open the list, open the ... menu in its header, then List settings.

Dynamic lists are the exception: they hold no things of their own, so they can never contain a sublist and the picker does not offer them a layout.

Board#

Each sublist is a column, and the things inside that sublist are its cards. Dragging a card to another column moves it into that sublist, which is the same move you would make in the List layout, just done sideways.

The board is a view of the same list, not a separate structure, so you can flip between List and Board and both stay correct. A column IS a sublist: rename it, open it, or select it, and you are acting on that sublist.

Column order is thing order. There is no separate ordering for columns, so moving a sublist up in the List layout moves its column left.

Gallery#

Gallery lays the same sublists out as a grid of cards rather than as columns. It suits a list whose sublists are things you browse and pick from, like recipes, projects or places, where seeing them all at once beats reading down a column.

Ordinary things in the list still appear as rows below the grid.

Going further#

Layout is per list. It is remembered on the list itself, so a board stays a board when you come back.

Board wants sublists first. A list with no sublists has nothing to make columns from. Make two or three sublists, then switch.

Headings are a different feature. Headings and subheadings group rows inside one list. Sublists are lists in their own right. Only sublists become columns.

Sorting still applies inside a column. Auto-sort and manual order both work within each sublist rather than being overridden.

Tips#

• Three or four columns is the useful range. A board with nine columns is a spreadsheet wearing a costume.
• If a board feels wrong, the list probably has stages that are really just to-dos in order.
• If switching to Board looks like it did nothing, the list has no sublists yet. That is the usual cause.
