Deleting sends a thing or a list to Trash rather than removing it immediately.

Why you'd care

Deletion is the one action with no natural undo once you have closed the app. Trash is the safety net, and knowing how long it holds things is worth ten seconds of reading.

The 60-second version

Deleted things and lists go to Trash. Open Trash to restore or permanently remove them.

How long things stay

Deleted items clear after 30 days. That is the default, and on the free plan it is the only setting: it keeps storage sensible for everyone.

Keep forever is the safer setting and costs only storage. If you have ever regretted a deletion, it is worth having.

Going further

Restoring returns it where it was. A restored thing goes back to its original list or day, not to a generic inbox.

Emptying is permanent. Settings Data Empty trash removes everything immediately, and nothing survives it. There is no second tier.

Trash is not archive. Trash is for mistakes and genuine removal. For a finished list you want to keep, archive instead. See archive.

Settings that change this

Tips

  • Turn the cleanup off unless you are tight on storage. Deleted things take very little room.
  • Check Trash before concluding something is lost. It is the answer more often than sync problems are.

If it's not working

I cannot find something I deleted. It may already have cleared, since Trash empties itself after 30 days unless you turned that off. See getting a deleted thing back.

A restored thing is not where I expected. It returns to its original location, which may be a day you have forgotten rather than the list you last saw it in.
