Lists
Auto reset
A list can uncheck itself on a schedule, so the same checklist is ready again when you next need it.
Auto reset is part of Twos Plus. Plus
Why you'd care
Routines are the one case where carry-over is wrong. You do not want yesterday's unfinished "stretch for ten minutes" following you around, and you do not want to retype the list every morning. Auto reset solves both: the same list, freshly unchecked.
Not every routine is daily, which is the point of choosing the schedule. A morning checklist resets every day. A grocery staples list resets every Wednesday, the day before you shop. Bill payments reset on the last day of the month. A quarterly review resets every 3 months.
The 60-second version
Make a list of the things you repeat, open its settings, and pick a schedule under Auto reset. It starts unchecked each time that schedule comes around.
Where to find it
In that list's own settings, not the app's Settings. Open the list, open the ... menu in its header, then List settings.
Web, Mac, Windows, and Linux
⌘⌥, opens the same place without the menu.
Look for the Auto reset row. It is per list, so a list you never want reset simply stays on Never.
Choosing a schedule
Pick how often, then when:
- Daily needs nothing else. It resets every day.
- Weekly asks which day of the week.
- Monthly asks which day of the month, including Last day, which is its own choice because the 31st does not exist in five months of the year.
- Yearly asks for a date.
Repeat every turns any of those into "every few". Monthly with repeat every 3 is a quarterly reset. Weekly with repeat every 2 is fortnightly. The row shows what you picked in plain words, and the sheet tells you the next date it will happen, so you never have to work it out yourself.
Going further
It unchecks, it does not delete. The things stay. Only their completion state is cleared, so the list is stable and only its state cycles.
It happens when you next open Twos. There is no server clock waiting on you. The reset runs on the first sync after the schedule comes around, on the date where you are, not where a server is.
Missing a reset does not stack them up. Away for three weeks with a weekly reset? The list clears once when you come back, not three times.
Changing the schedule does not reset the list. Picking "every Wednesday" on a Wednesday leaves today's checkmarks alone. The first reset is the next one.
Auto reset or carry-over? Carry-over is for work that must eventually get done. Auto reset is for things that recur whether or not you did them last time. Missing a day should leave no trace, and it does not. See carry-over.
Auto reset or template? A template creates a new list each time. Auto reset reuses one. For anything that repeats on a schedule, resetting is far less clutter. See templates.
Tips
- Keep a daily list to five things. A twenty-item morning checklist is a list you will start ignoring within a week.
- Put the list in your nav bar or bookmarks. A checklist you have to go looking for does not get used.
- Sublists inherit the parent's schedule when you create them, so a routine split into sections resets as one.
