Progress and completed things

How a list shows how far through it you are, and what happens to things once they are done.

The progress circle#

A list can show a circle indicating how many of its to-dos are complete.

It is most useful on finite lists: a packing list, a checklist, a project with an end. On a running list that grows forever it is noise, which is why it is a setting rather than always on.

Turn it on in Settings → Appearance & Accessibility → Progress circles on lists.

Where completed things go#

Two independent choices:

• In place, or collected. Each list either leaves finished things where they are or gathers them into their own collapsed section. Change it per list with Keep completed inline in the list's settings. Settings → Lists & Things → Show completed things inline is only the starting choice for new lists.
• Top or bottom. Settings → Lists & Things → Completed things at top decides which end the collected section sits at, on every list at once.

Going further#

In place is better for days. On a day, seeing what you finished among what you did not is the record. On a project list, collecting them out of the way is usually better.

Settings that change this#

• Settings → Appearance & Accessibility → Progress circles on lists shows the progress circle.
• Settings → Lists & Things → Show completed things inline keeps completed things in place.
• Settings → Lists & Things → Completed things at top puts them above rather than below.

Tips#

• Leave completed things inline on days and collapse them on long project lists.
• A progress circle that never moves is a sign the list is really a reference list, not a checklist.
