Almost everything you do to your things and lists can be undone, and anything you undo can be redone.

Why you'd care

Mistakes in a list app are rarely dramatic. You complete the wrong to-do, drag something into the wrong day, or tap Delete with twelve things selected when you meant Move. Undo means none of those cost you more than a second, which makes it safe to move fast.

The 60-second version

Web, Mac, Windows, and Linux

Press ⌘Z to undo your last change, and ⌘⇧Z to redo it. Keep pressing to walk further back or forward. On the desktop app, Edit ▸ Undo in the menu bar does the same and names what it will undo, like "Undo Complete".

iPhone, iPad, and Android

Shake your phone. Twos asks "Undo Complete?" (or whatever you last did). Tap Undo, and a toast confirms it. Tap the toast to redo. If you would rather tap than shake, add the Undo and Redo buttons to your edit bar.

Undo a change

Web, Mac, Windows, and Linux

Click away from any text field so your cursor is not in a thing, then press ⌘Z. The change reverses right where it happened, and the reversal syncs to your other devices like any other edit.

iPhone, iPad, and Android

Dismiss the keyboard, then give the phone a firm shake. A gentle wobble or walking with it in your pocket will not trigger it, and the prompt always asks before anything changes, so a stray shake never costs you work. Tap Undo to confirm or Cancel to leave everything as it is.

Redo it

Web, Mac, Windows, and Linux

Press ⌘⇧Z. Redo is available until you make a new change, at which point the redo history starts over from there.

iPhone, iPad, and Android

Tap the "Undid … · Redo" toast right after undoing. If it has already faded, shake again. When both are possible, the prompt offers both and labels each one, like "Undo Delete" and "Redo Move", so you always know which you are picking.

Shake is switched off while the keyboard is up, so the edit bar has its own Undo and Redo buttons for when you are in the middle of editing. They live in the bar's More sheet by default. Move them into the bar itself to have them one tap away. See customize the bars. Plus

The buttons dim when there is nothing to undo or redo. If an undo removes the thing you were editing, editing ends cleanly instead of leaving the bar stuck on a row that no longer exists.

Web, Mac, Windows, and Linux

On the web and desktop, the keyboard shortcuts are the buttons. Rebind them in keyboard shortcuts if ⌘Z collides with something else you use.

What you can undo

  • Completing, canceling, and starring. Undo puts a thing back in exactly the state it was in, so canceling a completed to-do and then undoing returns it to completed, not to open.
  • Editing. Text, type, bold, italic, underline, highlight, color, links, and tags.
  • Adding a thing. Undo removes what you just added. See the note on text fields below.
  • Deleting. Things and whole lists come back in the same place, with the same order.
  • Moving and reordering. Moving to another list, moving to today or tomorrow, dragging, move up and down, and indenting or outdenting.
  • Copying and cloning. Undo removes the copies. Plus
  • Joining and splitting. Both the keyboard versions and the ones in the selection bar.
  • Sublists. Turning a thing into a sublist, dissolving a sublist back into its parent, and adding a list into another list.
  • Lists. Archiving, changing the sort (including auto-sort), bookmarking, and making a list public or private.
  • Reminders. Adding or removing a one-time reminder.
  • Link previews. Hiding or showing a preview card.
  • Typing shortcuts. A dash that just turned into a dash thing goes back to being a literal dash. See typing shortcuts.

A bulk action is one undo. Delete twenty selected things, and one undo brings all twenty back. The same goes for moving, tagging, or completing a selection. See select many things at once.

What you can't undo

These are deliberately left out, because reversing them would reach past your own things:

  • Comments. Posting one notifies someone else straight away, and undo cannot un-send a notification.
  • Chat with the AI. The assistant can act on your account, and there is no before picture to go back to. See chat.
  • Completing a repeating reminder. Completing it schedules the next occurrence, which is not cleanly reversible. Uncheck it by hand if you completed it by mistake.
  • Bookmarking a shared list, and saving someone else's list. Both touch other people's lists and could notify them each time you undo or redo. Tap the bookmark or the Saved pill again instead.

A few everyday actions are not covered yet: editing an existing reminder, saving a copy of a shared thing into your own list, voice and photo captures, and actions on memory cards.

Going further

Undo history lasts for the session. It holds your last 30 changes, and it clears when you reload the page, fully close the app, or sign out. For anything older, Trash still has your deleted things. See getting a deleted thing back.

Each device keeps its own history. Undoing on your laptop reverses what you did on your laptop. The result syncs everywhere, but your phone's undo history does not include your laptop's changes.

Undo never fights a newer edit. If the thing you are undoing was changed or deleted on another device in the meantime, Twos shows "Couldn't undo, item changed" and leaves it alone rather than overwriting the newer version.

Web, Mac, Windows, and Linux

Inside a text field, undo is text undo. While your cursor is in a thing, ⌘Z undoes your typing, the way it does in any editor. Click out of the field to undo a change to the list instead. The one exception is the empty input right after you add a thing: pressing ⌘Z there removes the thing you just added, since there is no typing left to undo.

iPhone, iPad, and Android

Shake stands down while you type. With the keyboard up, iOS uses shake for its own text undo, so Twos stays out of the way. Close the keyboard first, or use the edit bar buttons. A hardware keyboard also works: ⌘Z and ⌘⇧Z undo and redo without the prompt, since a key press is never an accident.

Tips

  • Undo is the fastest way to recover from a bulk mistake. Reach for it before Trash, because it restores order and placement exactly.
  • Undo also covers the things you did by accident with a swipe, like completing or deleting the wrong row.
  • If you shook the phone and got a prompt you did not want, Cancel changes nothing.

If it's not working

⌘Z only undid my typing. Your cursor was still in a text field. Click an empty part of the page and press it again.

Shaking does nothing. The keyboard is probably up, or there is nothing to undo yet. Close the keyboard and try a firmer shake. Undo history also starts fresh every time the app is fully closed.

It said "Couldn't undo, item changed". The thing was edited or deleted somewhere else after your change, so undoing would have overwritten newer work. Make the fix by hand.

Undo skipped over something I did. That action is on the can't-undo list above. Press undo again to keep going further back.
