Notes • July 23, 2025by johnataylor on TwosFun Fact: On July 23, 1903, Ford Motor Company sold its first car. A 1903 Model A, it was purchased by Dr. Ernst (Ernest) Pfennig, a dentist from Chicago, Illinois. The automobile was purchased for $850 with a tonneau (back seat). The Model A had a two-cylinder, eight-horsepower engine; two forward gears and one reverse, a top speed of nearly 30 mph, red paint, as all original Model A’s came only in red at the time, and a convertible design, with the top as an add-on rather than standard. Today, Ford is the second-largest American-based automaker, behind General Motors, and the sixth-largest in the world, behind Toyota, Volkswagen Group, Hyundai Motor Group, Stellantis, and General Motors, based on 2022 vehicle production.
