The Board of Directors don’t really know what they want in an Executive Director (they admitted this during our last meeting), and in spite of what they called “a stellar resume and references,” they were asking me to interview for a fourth time just to ensure they have the right fit. (They initially called me. I didn’t ask for this position). They are suffering from “Founder’s Syndrome,” and in my view, if they still have concerns, however unfounded they may be, then I am unwilling to come out of retirement to step into that battleground. So I suggested that they regroup, determine what they want an Executive Director to be, rather than dictating what they want the Executive Director to do. They want a hireling, but they need a leader. I am not a hireling, and hopefully they’ll take the leadership advice I offered and regroup.
