Podcast Things
by BazingaPunkers on Twos
- I listened to a podcast from Lewis Howes : The School of Greatness featuring Evy Poumpouras, an Ex-Secret Service Agent. The interviewer asked a question about three things that she learned, she wished others would know as well. Her answers were beautiful. Below is the breakdown of that three things.
- Your Circle Around You Matter
She said you’re like a bouncer at the club door. You decide who to let in, how long they can be there and who to throw out. This is really important as it coincides with the principle of you are who your circle is. A good example is, if you have a friend who is full of drama, their drama will bleed into yours. You should be careful who you let in your circle and don’t be afraid to remove if they are bringing no value in your life. Being nice and kind is important, but not the only criteria for you to maintain a healthy circle.
- Be Instrumental, Not Identity
There are 2 motivational mindsets. They are IDENTITY and INSTRUMENTAL. Identity is someone who takes things personally and emotional. Don’t get me wrong, they are important, but it needs to be practiced in the right place and not all the time. If your superior does not like your presentation deck and corrects you by saying this is wrong and how you should do it, don’t take it personally. If the feedbacks are genuine, take it and correct yourself. Because the intention behind those feedback is for you to improve. If you take it personally i.e. my boss don’t like me, my boss hates me, my boss is bias and etc., it’s difficult for you to progress in life. Instrumental on the other hand, is goal focused. They know what is the goal, and only work towards the goal. If a client is pissed due to some error, an instrumental person will only focus on how to solve the problem and get it out of the way. They very rarely will sit down, break down, think of why the client treats them this way, why they are rude, why they don’t like me and etc. Certainly, root cause analysis must be done to identify why the client is not happy at the first place, but being instrumental is key to get things done and focus on what’s important next.
- Humility
As you grow in life and career, don’t forget to be humble. Being humble keeps you grounded where you must be trained to put other important things ahead of you. You’re not special. You’re not above everyone else and certainly there is no need for others to treat you special. There are other things more important than you. Realise that. If you do, you’ll be forever be in a state where you’re learning and growing rather than be comfortable and stay stagnant because hey, you’re special already right.
- These are the key take aways from the podcast which I found interesting. Hope it’s useful for you guys too! Cheers!
