The conscious is "what I know about myself" and immediate memory, while the inconscious is "what I am unaware of about myself" and deep memory. They work independently of each other. To enable communication between the two, one must reach an altered state of consciousness. The conscious will be put aside allowing a better interaction with the inconscious. The latter doesn't make a difference between between reality and imagination. Induction is the set of techniques used to get into this state. When starting self-hypnosis, it is important to reassure the inconscious for having ignored it for so long and explain what is expected of it. Do not judge the inconscious as it may become resistant. Its purpose is to protect you by any means it possesses. It only wants what is best for you. In hypnosis, nothing is worsened, but rather a problem is unearthed in order to work on it, and only when the inconscious knows the conscious is ready to deal with it. Additionally, there is no forcing, only suggestion. It is important to avoid analyzing things and instead have trust in the inconscious and become aware of the obtained change. The language of the inconscious consists of feelings (emotions, physical sensations, the five senses), imagination (symbolism), and intuition.
