Tues Aug 22, 2023by Nicola on TwosBeen busy busy at the farm. Not logged what we've been doing of late so here's a catch up! We built the hen house and relocated it to the right spot. We've been to a place called Lester Lowe that provisions farms and stables. Bought a new wheelbarrow, posts, a gate, poultry feed, layers pellets, food bins, roofing to fix the old hen house roof. We did a fair bit of weeding and topped off the beds with sheep fleece. Phil, in his tractor, filled up the tractor bucket and tipped a load of muck over the hedge for us. We shovelled the sheep poo and muck on to the fleece. We've built a cold frame using leftover bricks and a double glazed panel. We repurposed a wheel barrow, filled it with muck, and are going to use it as a planter. One evening I helped Phil round up the sheep - although Douglas, his sheepdog, did most of the work - and we injected a ram with a poorly foot with some antibiotics and applied iodine. A couple of sheep with blow fly maggots had their rear ends sheared and coated with iodine. I checked in on the orchard where Bear, the ram, is consorting with the ladies. These are all Dorset sheep. The lambs should be due around the second week in January. I'm hoping to get hands on with lambing.
