Kanban > Eisenhower Matrix

- If Toyota assembly lines in the 1950s–80s had tried to run on Eisenhower Matrices instead of Kanban… the entire global auto industry would look completely different (and probably worse).
- Picture this:
- A worker spots an empty bin of brake pads.
- Instead of pulling a kanban card and triggering instant replenishment, he stops the line, opens his little 2×2 paper matrix, and starts debating:
- “Is ‘no brake pads’ urgent? Yes. Is it important? Obviously. So… Quadrant I. Cool, I’ll do it myself right away!”
- → He runs to the warehouse, grabs the parts, runs back. Ten minutes lost, line stopped, 30 cars not built.
- Meanwhile, the supervisor is holding a daily 45-minute “prioritization meeting” where everyone argues whether preventing the next stockout is Quadrant I or Quadrant II, and whether line stoppages should be “delegated” to the logistics team.
- Someone inevitably draws a giant Eisenhower Matrix on the wall with sticky notes. Within a week it’s covered in 400 tasks that never move because “they’re important but not urgent.” The andon cord gathers dust because pulling it creates an “urgent” item and nobody wants to be the guy who keeps filling Quadrant I.
- Quality issues? They get scheduled into next Thursday’s Quadrant II time block for “root cause analysis.” By then the defect has already shipped to 5,000 customers.
- The plant manager proudly reports: “We eliminated all Quadrant III and IV activities!”
- Translation: they stopped answering phones, doing preventive maintenance, and cleaning the floor (because 5S is “not urgent”).
- Toyota would have gone bankrupt by 1965, Germany would still dominate car manufacturing, and we’d all be driving over-engineered Mercedes that cost $250,000.
- Kanban wins because it doesn’t ask workers to philosophize about urgency and importance in real time; it makes the system itself scream when something is wrong, and the response is automatic and local. No meetings, no debates, no 2×2 grid—just flow.
- Eisenhower Matrix on the factory floor would have been comedic suicide. 😅
- Thank God Taiichi Ohno never saw a PowerPoint slide about “delegating urgency.”
