- Companies have been successfully working on this for two decades but when the prospect of "owning" "land" in the Metaverse surfaced, it became immediately obvious what the playbook was:
- "You'll own nothing out here, and nothing in there."
- It was a Capitalism-- or technofeudalism speedrun and it was called out as such.
- Obviously, it made me very happy to see the unanimous backlash to that nonsense.
- But, for a while there, it seemed as if these companies would be able to effectively consolidate all access to the world wide web. And they could've done so with zero pushback from government officials too busy counting their lobby money or pretending to care about the morality of online spaces that, at their best, provide a safe space for marginalized voices to find each other and build community.
