- Here are some notes that stood out to me as I interviewed Shelby about her role at Life.Church as a product designer.
- Find good mentors, even if it's just someone one step or season ahead of you. Iron sharpens iron.
- Subscribe to Medium tags or a keywords like "UX design". You can find a lot of great learnings and perspectives there.
- For user testing, find someone who doesn't have all the in-the-weeds context, and learn from them. Get their insights. Fresh eyes bring perspective.
- Give them enough info, but not too much when getting user input. Don't force them to think like you. Be curious.
- Block off a specific day to be available for user interviews. This makes it easy to know when you'll do a user interview without having to figure out each time. Save time with a scheduled time.
- Sometimes user testing can work well by getting a list of people who want to volunteer, like a panel. Get to know them.
- Interaction Design has a lot of great learning resources.
- Instead of starting the design in Figma, try starting to wireframe the idea out in Figjam. Lower fidelity design helps provide the idea and can waste less time.
- Mobbin.com has a ton of great industry-standard user flows. Learn from them
- When handing off designs to engineers, you can better enable them by using simple tools such as even using a sticky note to tell the engineer specifics that might not easily be seen from the designs, such as max-width or something.
- The people you design for are your number one priority, so spend some time really getting to know them and their needs.
- These insights were super helpful. I made it a goal of mine to interview different product designers on the YouVersion and Life.Church teams, so that I can first get to know them better and then begin to grow in skills as a product designer. I'm new to this role and want to live like a sponge, so that I can best contribute and be an advocate for the user.
