You’re Not a Realist, You're a Pessimist

- “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” - Winston Churchill
- "I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist."
- This is something I hear a lot... usually from someone after they tell an optimist why something won't work.
- I recently read a book called "See Do Repeat" by Dr. Rebecca White where she covers the difference between an optimist and a pessimist.
- "An optimist believes that whatever happens is the best outcome, even when it isn’t what we expected or wanted."
- "A pessimist believes that their decisions are always ill-fated, and no matter what they do, the outcome will be bad."
- Dr. White says, "optimists aren’t unrealistic. It also doesn’t mean they ignore the bad stuff. They are very grounded in reality. They trust that they have control over their future, while accepting what cannot be changed. They are seldom surprised by trouble. They understand their pathway will not always be smooth."
- You can be a realistic optimist... and most are.
- People who say "I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist" are usually trying to protect themselves from looking like a pessimist.
- It's okay to be either, just try to be honest with yourself.
- “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” - Helen Keller
