When you step up to a shot if you think of formulas, checklists, or swing keys you’re not free. Freedom is stepping up to a shot as if you were the very first golfer, unburdened by past history with a future full of possibilities. The more freedom, enjoyment, and enthusiasm you experience, the better your performance. No one can be taught anything unless they are ready and willing to learn. Golfers that seek external approval, are full of judgment and are always upset. Enjoyment in golf always shows up when “you” disappear. Be extrospective. Focus your attention on real things and not on your internal dialogue. People get upset after a bad shot because they think they are going to do it again. You have a bright future. A future that is not determined by your past. Keep the possibilities of your future open. Play well with good sportsmanship, enjoy yourself, and have an experience you can remember fondly for the rest of your life. Golf is a balance of enjoyment, learning, and performance. Learning and enjoyment are the foundation for good performance. Extraordinary golf comes not from just doing things differently, but from a new way of being. Being precedes doing. What's the best that could happen? Live without fear. Don’t worry about the consequences or what people may say. Just live and let it go every time. The worst isn’t so bad and the best isn’t so good. The purpose of golf is for you to decide. Enjoy doing it all. Play a game that gives you joy and satisfaction and makes you a better person to your family and friends. Play with enthusiasm, play with freedom. Appreciate the beauty of nature and the people around you. Realize how lucky you are to be able to do it. Awareness leads to improvement. Instead of seeing what's wrong, look for what's possible. Simply look for new possibilities. As you practice, develop an awareness of your golf swing without judging it. Your instincts are extraordinary and you’ve gone against them from the time you first started golfing. When Michelangelo created David, he went to a block of marble and removed everything that wasn’t David. He added nothing. Great golf is a process of removing the interference you’ve put on yourself from the very first day. Step up to your shot and let it go. We all instinctively know how to propel an object in the most efficient way possible. Think about throwing the club forward. The body behaves according to the target that we give it. Visualize and focus on the target. If you see yourself as someone who can produce a graceful and powerful swing, you have a whole new world of possibilities. Either you have self-interference or you have a natural golf swing. The genius resides in the student. When you make judgments you don’t see what is there, rather you see what you think should be there. A coach is a person who knows what you want and helps you get it. Coach only when asked, only on what you are asked to coach, and only for a specific amount of time. The coach is only a mirror to reflect reality. Ask “what did you learn?“ rather than “what did you shoot?“. Lead by example. Be the kind of person that you want your child to be, and that person will show up in your child. Don’t be comfortable, be fully alive. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.“ - Franklin Roosevelt. Fear shuts down your life. “It ain’t real if ya ain’t got the feel.“. Awareness comes in the absence of trying to do things. The true value of competition lies in the growth inspired in the competitor. The real contest is you versus you. Extraordinary people live their lives backward. They create a future and then they live into it. It is possible to play extraordinary golf starting right now. Having a future that inspires you and gives you possibilities has a tremendous impact on what you do at any moment. The future you live into alters the person you are being. To sustain breakthroughs you need the support of your environment. In order for people to support you, they must know what you’re about and you must make them aware of your new point of view, goals, and commitments. Art happens when you become completely immersed in what you are doing. What’s important is the leap. Golf as a contribution to others. Be fully present, creating as you go. ”You” need to disappear. All your stories and formulas. Creativity is the art of what's possible. What could exist greatly exceeds what does exist. Each moment is vibrant, alive, and full of possibility. Intellectual understanding followed by experience. If you change the type of golfer you are, you will play better golf. Recognizing self-interference is the first step in getting past it. While putting, see the hole as the middle of something. Write down what you really want when you play golf. Write down what really makes you happy. Pick a goal for your next round of golf and write down a commitment that you'll make. Don't try to fix anything. Become more aware of your swing, body, and target. Notice the thoughts that arise. Just let it be, don't react to it. Concentrate, the ability to stay with reality for about two seconds, on the swing. Concentrate on one thing, the ball, for the entire swing. Get out of your own way. Let your destination guide you. Don't think quick fix, think mastery. You can trust your instincts so you can let go. Once you know something, you can stop thinking and you can release your attention. Once you know your target, where you are going, you can really let it go. The opposite of fear is letting go, trust. Once you become aware of fear, you can let it go. Once the joy of letting go becomes more important to you than the quality of your shots, the quality of your shots will amaze you, and you will have truly become a golfer. Envision your shots, trust your stoke and think of the endless possibilities of greatness with each new shot and moment.
